Why Madrid is perfect for vegans

There has never been anything easier than being vegan in Madrid – and I have lived in London for four years! There are many 100% vegan-friendly restaurants, vegan fast food places with things like vegan calamari, gluten-free takeaway cake shops, eateries that serve cheese platters, ice cream stores, smoothie joints offering wheatgrass shots – even a place selling only plant-based pizza.

Plus you can find 100% animal product free shops stocking more items than you could ever imagine.

When I first arrived here I had no expectation to find all this deliciousness – it’s totally blown my mind!

Top Vegan-Friendly Breakfast Places in Madrid

1. Zenith Brunch & Cocktails

We make vegan food with substance, colors and flavors… Our inspiration comes from the mixture of cultures, especially from Nepal, the surrounding countries and the European Mediterranean cuisine. So you will enjoy sensations and textures very different from what you would find in a traditional vegan restaurant, we are sure you will enjoy the essence of each of our dishes!

TripAdvisor has deemed Zenith one of the most ‘Instagrammable’ restaurants in the world and currently number 1 in Madrid’s ranking. Present not only in Madrid, but now Barcelona as well; Zenith offers a modern, avant-garde space with an industrial look while offering original and healthy options such as vegan and gluten free dishes.

2. La Hummuseria

La Hummuseria is a hummus restaurant specializing in Middle Eastern vegetarian cuisine with lots of fresh vegetables and spices. La Hummuseria was founded in 2015 by an Israeli couple passionate about food and people: Shai & Lotem.

We strive to bring the experience of a Mediterranean market – including its colors, herbs, music, food and happy people – to the heart of Madrid. Our dishes are made from only 100% fresh ingredients without any additives or preservatives.

3. Mad Mad Vegan

This vegan restaurant is a great spot to check out for lunch. The atmosphere is chill and the staff are friendly, while the food offerings – mostly sandwiches – are delicious. They also have regular and Cajun style fries which went down well too. Even if you’re not vegan, their burgers won’t leave you feeling overly full or gross afterwards!

Our project is focused on joining the change we believe to be necessary. The chain depicted in our logo has been broken into pieces, symbolizing that there are certain chains which should not exist but do – an open-ended meaning with a clear path: break molds, liberate yourself, be nonconformist and fight for what you stand for; in short, it encompasses the energy of change within a hungry project.

4. Distrito Vegano

I would describe the vegan restaurants as offering “traditionally-inspired dishes with a twist”. There are two of them in Madrid, each serving different menus.

100% plant-based foods don’t mean sacrificing the flavors we all love; our dishes have been developed through months of research and development, delivering comfort food with traditional touches suitable for every palate. Every day, we receive fresh fruits and vegetables to cook our dishes. We work with the best vegetable-based cheeses on the market.

6. Chillin’ Cafe

I absolutely adore this place! The food, atmosphere, music and decorations make it so cozy. Plus, everything is vegan! I had the french toast with a black tea; it was definitely one of the best French toasts I’ve ever had.

If you’re in Madrid, be sure to visit – not only will you find kind staff members but also some delectable cakes that look too good to eat!

7. Hakuna Matata Veggie

Hakuna Matata Veggie offers traditional Spanish cuisine, but 100% vegan version. The array of vegan dishes was truly astonishing! I was very impressed with the Calamari, Shrimp, Cheese Platter and Tiramisu replicas.

Not only was the food superbly crafted but its quality felt extraordinary too; you get great value for your money here. My absolute favorite though had to be the Mushroom Croquettes – after having tried croquettes from many places before these ones by far left me most satisfied due to their bold flavor.

8. Levél Veggie Bistro

In the middle of Madrid lies a wonderful discovery – a vegan spot with an inviting atmosphere and incredibly friendly staff! I had the “From Thailand” dish, which was packed with vegetables, rice, and scrumptious curry. To cap off this amazing experience graciously, I indulged in their double chocolate cake. It can cost up to $25 per person but it is definitely worth it!

9. Freedom Cakes Café

The cakes I had here were the best vegan cakes I’ve ever had. Seriously, even the cheesecake was incredible! Normally, I’m not a fan of vegan cheesecakes because they’re usually nut-based, but this one is either an exception or its texture has been altered somehow.

Not only are these great for being vegan – they’re just good cakes in general! The sponge was super moist and the frosting rich; we forgot to take photos before starting to eat them. If you have a chance then definitely try out their Pink Panther and Red Velvet varieties – you won’t be disappointed!

Overall, Madrid is an amazing city for vegan breakfast options. From classic Spanish delicacies to international spins on the traditional dish, there are plenty of good places to find a tasty and nutritious meal that suits your dietary needs!
